Abstract: The aim of the paper is to present and discuss the state of organic food market in Poland as well as limitations and opportunities for further development of the market, occurring in the
retail sphere. The condition of the organic food market in Poland was characterised in the paper as well as the results of the research conducted between 2011 and 2012 on retail of organic food. The study covered
131 specialist shops, 109 general grocery outlets and 179 supermarkets. The investigation proved that only part of the specialist stores offered complete organic food product range. One of the obstacles of the improvement
of the retail sphere is weak offer of the providers and dispersion of producers and distributors. Collaboration between retailers and other distribution sphere participants may contribute to the overcoming the developmental barriers.
